I was planning on upgrading to a 970 or a 1050ti since of the GPU price inflation at this current time, As I bought Rainbow Six Siege and GTA V and realized how my PC is starting to become out of date. As I saw rendering issues in GTA V and Stutters in Rainbow Six, Is it worth me buying an aftermarket cooler and a z170 motherboard and overlock my i5 6400 or buy a new motherboard and CPU (preferably Ryzen 5 or i5 8th gen) I don't have very much money to spend on this PC and I don't mind a 10 degree increase. Just whatever is cheaper and reliable for me to do. As also I'm aware of me having to run an earlier bios version to be able to overclock. Thanks in advance

My current build:
CPU:i5 6400
MOTHO:LENOVO SKYBAY
GPU:750 ti
RAM:8gb (DDR4 2133 1x8)
STORAGE:250gb SSD V-NAND 860
2tb SSHD 8gb SSD

1. You can not really OC I5 6400 or any non-k processors.
2. I5 6400 is still ok for even GTX1070 on most games. I would go for at least GTX1060 6GB. I would not go for a big overhaul on the proc side yet.
3. Add the RAM to 16GB if you can
4. If your PC is a pre-built, pay attention with the PSU before getting the new GPU.

Note:
- GTX970, 980, RX580 and GTX1060 6GB are quite near.
- 1050Ti is weaker

I have a 450watt PSU in my PC at this current time and know that I can run a gtx 1050 ti and gtx 1060 6b but if i was to upgrade to a 600 psu to run a 970

450W should be sufficient for GTX970 or 1060 6B for longer term...but...only if the PSU is a good one!
If this 450W PSU is included in the pre-built, I have my doubts. PSUSs on pre-builts are usually designed only to fit to that build, any further upgrades are not considered.

But still doesn't answer my question should I overclock my CPU with a z170 board or go for a newer Ryzen CPU and motherboard
