Not that knowledgeable with PC so try to make sense if I start making no sense :)

PC -
500W Power Supply
AMD GA-F2A78M-HD2 motherboard
a8 7650k (AMD Ryzen 5 1500x on way)
gtx 1060 6gb (on way)
2x 8gb ddr3 memory
1tb storage hard drive

Do I need a SSD for overall speed, will it effect performance (framerates etc)
Anything bottlenecking?
Thanks

If its the G2 or G3 its a good choice.

Looks good to me except for the Ram. get a 2x8gb kit so it runs in dual channel. Yes it makes a performance difference.

cpuboss is garbage, don't use it.

The major difference between the two is the 1600 has 2 more cores. Today it may not be a big deal but next year or the year after it may make much more of a difference. The Ryzen 5 1600 (not X) DOES come with a cooler, if you can afford the bump up its worth it.

An SSD will not effect frame rates. It will effect load times and the desktop responsiveness in Windows. I wouldn't build a PC without one today, or perhaps Optane cache to speed up a hard drive.

A Ryzen 5 and a GTX 1060 are a good pairing.

I assume you've purchased a motherboard and RAM with your new CPU?

Do you have a motherboard and memory on order too, because that Ram and motherboard won't work with a Ryzen CPU. Also what PSU do you have, best not to put those fancy new parts on a junk PSU.

Do you need an SSD? No. But it makes a huge difference in the PC's responsiveness, especially booting and doing daily tasks.

Just found out my motherboard is not compatible, bought a prebuilt few years ago and now decided is time to upgrade it. Ryzen 5 was only because of my motherboard but now would it be worth me going down the intel route as I need a new board?
Bought another ddr3 8gb ram stick (16gb) so didn't really want to get an ddr4 board. Got about £500 to spend on upgrading it. Power supply is EVGA 500w don't say I need one of them as well :( Or am I going over the top with the graphics card? Want about 180 fps on low settings (Fortnite) Worst thing I ever done was buy a prebuilt when I didn't have a clue what I needed. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You already bought the Ryzen 5 and its an excellent choice. There are a lot of well priced boards for it. Either way even if you went Intel you'd need DDR4 memory so you are stuck there.

The cheaper EVGA 500w is not a great PSU, you'll survive on it for now but I'd suggest saving to replace that someday in the next year.

Well, if you already have 16GB of DDR3 that would be pricey to replace. Intel is a good option as well, but then you would need DDR4 again.

A 4th generation Intel i7-4790 or something like that is the best you can do for DDR3. This is only about 20% off from the fastest CPUs available (per core). And much faster than an old AMD APU. Those aren't exactly cheap new. One of the best ways to get one is actually a used pre-built.

This does mean dealing with an OEM board, and getting a power supply adapter. And dealing with the proprietary fans and front panel I/O.

Just an i7-4790 or i7-4790k is more than $300 new.

I found this board for the Ryzen 5 https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/ZHyxFT/asus-strix-b350-f-gaming-atx-am4-motherboard-strix-b350-f-gaming, been using parts picker to make sure they are compatible. I'd rather spend what I need to now than have to fork out more money later on. I wouldn't need a CPU cooler for that CPU will I? Hope my case will fit, I can't find my case on parts picker this is the prebuilt I bought ages ago https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017T0UUR6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Learning so much talking on here thanks again for the replies :)

Yes it will fit in that case, and the Ryzen 5 1500X comes with a good cooler in box.

So if I get the Ryzen 5 1500x, the Ryzen b350 motherboard, gtx 1060 6gb, sell my ram and buy 2x 8gb ddr4, keep my case, buy an ssd, better power supply, you tried the gtx 1060 6gb? Any others you'd recommend? could get the Ryzen 5 1600x but think it would bottleneck the 1060. Can't wait to start this build!

Make sure for ram you get yourself some DDR4-3000 . As for the PSU if you can't afford it now, save up and get a better one soon (Seasonic Focus is your best choice, 500w is plenty).

You are too concerned about bottlenecking, everything bottlenecks somehow, the concern is whether it affects playability or will even be noticeable. In this case either processor is fine, the 1600x of course a little better and will give you a little more FPS in some games, and a lot more in others (it has 2 extra cores), but it does NOT come with a cooler, so you'd need to buy one.

What about the evga supernova 550w?

Good board & cheaper.

Cancel or return the 1500x if possible.

Buy the Ryzen 1600 non x. It's less than £10 more & a full 50% more gpu.

Your Psu will manage if youre budget limited
Replace it if possible.

Your case does look limited on gpu length - I hope you picked a smaller model card.
