My internet speeds are horrible as i've said in another post, paying for 120mb DL and only getting 500 k/bs. I thought testing my sisters laptop would assure things that i've thought about and it gets over 100mb DL. I bought a new adapter hoping it'd help but not really. I looked into network cards seeing if mines faulty etc. I noticed that they seem to stick out but the only thing in my pc that sticks out is my gfx card. So i thought, "wait do i even have one?" yet i have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller apparently. With these issues should I upgrade to something else?

Some side information. It seems with the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller it has an ethernet cable only option according to the one i see on google and the ethernet part i have is literally built into the motherboard which is a BIOSTAR Group A320MH PRO

I cant use ethernet otherwise id have to run it through holes in the floor/ceiling from my room.

I just have a feeling ive been using an adapter and no wifi/network card? I found one i can use with my pc not sure exactly where it would go either.

I'm a bit slow when it comes to
the core of computers. Thanks to any help in advanced

Agree with 10tacie.

First things first, we need to determine if your low speeds are a problem with your internet connection or a problem with WiFi. Only way we can do this is to plug the computer (possibly test with sister's laptop) directly into router via etherent.
Then go to speedtest.net and test the speed with ethernet (testing download speed from a website download or torrent is not a good test because the speed their server can supply the data may be much lower then the speed your internet connection can recieve it).

If the speeds are just as slow on ethernet then contact your ISP. Either the connection is bad or the router/modem is bad.

If the speedtest comes back fine on ethernet then the issue is with WiFi.
This becomes a...
First, I'd move that PC into the room where the router/cable modem is and ethernet connect it. If you are getting fast speeds there, then you know you have a WiFi interface failure somewhere. You don't say if your adapter is PCI based (internal card with an antennae) or USB thumb drive based, but that really shouldn't matter if both are functioning correctly and Windows doesn't have an issue in the device manager (look for the yellow triangle exclamation points for any problems there).

In normal circumstances, the PC's motherboard shouldn't care whether you are using ethernet or a wireless device as far as performance is concerned outside of normal WiFi distance degradation over being hardwired.

This becomes a litte harder to pin point because the problem could be a defective router, a defective wifi card in device you are testing, could be outside interference from neighbors, interference from another 2.4ghz device near the router, or just that there are too many walls/obstacles between you and the router. Also if you have multiple walls between you and the router you need to use the 2.4 ghz band not the 5ghz band as 5ghz signal has less range.

I would suggest you look at buying a powerline adapter (av1000 or faster) over a wifi card for a desktop. This provides better performance and reliability over wifi, but I would not recommend it for old apartment buildings where the wiring likley has lots of rf noise.

If this is a shared router (like an apartment building has shared wifi with 1-2 units in the building) then that is an entirely different can of worms.

I havent tried testing the ethernet since the cord i have may be broken since I havent used it in years, I've only tested distance and it doesnt seem to matter. My PC by the router = same speeds, my sisters laptop in my room = same speed for her (over 90-100mb). Even our phones completely shatter my PC connection lol. I've ruled that out so i narrowed it down to something within my computer. I do have a USB adapter, its a netgear 300mb/s one but no network adapter cards, and i had intended on ordering a TP Link PCI 150mb/s or something like that (on a budget). Ive ran tests/diagnosis on anything involving internet connection on my PC and they all come back good & working normally, all drivers updated.

update: Just realized i said i dont have a network card technically (? theres no card at all in the slots so im not even sure) but i supposedly have the one i listed in the question, realtek pcie family controller one. Apparently its built for using LAN connection, i just assume maybe i need one for WIFI instead?

Also i've read that a USB adapter and a network card are pretty much the same thing so would it be a waste of money to try one?

I just tried using ethernet after the struggle of setting everything up. My DL speed is a solid high 190mb/s.As much as i wish i could use ethernet, i need WIFI. Also as you stated interference, etc, I dont truly believe its the router since everything in the house using wifi is beyond fast, even my TV. so nothings slowing those down

Also ive forgot to mention my internet on my PC always cuts out. Ill be trying to connect and as it takes years to connect to the WIFI it tells me it cant connect. Sometimes it just tells me its connected but no internet while everything else in the house is fine like normal. it does this throughout the day while im browsing, watching youtube or gaming With ridiculous ping yet everything else like i said, is fine.

I've come to do some convincing and am moving the router to my room, now my problem is having to re-rout the coax cord to my room on the outside from the wires attached to my house without messing something up but im sure i got this, I appreciate all the help. Thanks
