need advice before i purchase mobo/cpu/cooler kit

Hi all

My current setup:
i7 3770/P8Z77-VL X2
16 gb ram and tx3 cooler master cpu cooler

I had this build for my studies, hence the amount of ram and the i7

But i no longer use it for desktop purposes, only for gaming

i came across a guy offering an i5 6600k
with MSIZ170A Krait gaming 3X
and a be quiet cooler (no ram included)
for 180 euro shipping included

I figured i can sell my mobo/cpu/cooler/ram for about 200 euro
buy some ddr4 ram and thus get a low cost upgrade before my current setup get's too old
(i realize i don't really NEED to upgrade my rig at this time, but it just seems like a good thing to do)

What do you guys think?

Solution
Hi there. I see that you are upgrading for gaming purpose only. I presume that you currently have ddr3 ram. My suggestion would be that you ditch that offer and go with an intel i5 8400 costing around 200 dollars on newegg and bundle it with a cheap gigabyte h310m mobo costing 56 dollars with a 8gb ×2 corsair vengeance ddr4 ram. Again i presume u will retain your old PSU but if not then go with corsair vs 550. Its not the best but it will get your work done. For the GPU you can buy whichever fits your budget. I have suggested this build becuz i5 8400 will give you 15-20 fps more than that 6600k. Also as it is a non overclockable cpu i went with that mobo.
If you dont have any money left for the gpu and will make do with inbuilt graphics...
Its a good buy compared to original retail prices & I can understand wanting to get onto a more modern platform as cheaply as possible.

There are 3 issues though.

1. Performance wise (now games are hitting 6-8 threads) it's not a great upgrade.

2. Though it's more modern it's still a 'dead' socket

3. An i3 8100 & a cheap board costs about the same new , is a current platform & will perform about the same.

If you dont have any money left for the gpu and will make do with inbuilt graphics then i would suggest you to use ryzen 2400g with inbuilt rx vega 11 graphics which will easily give you 50-55 fps on high settings at 1080p in Battlefield 1 and many AAA titles. You might have to tweak some settings.
For the mobo you can use Msi a320m pro vd. For the ram you can use the same as the intel build.

Solution
Your current cpu is still viable with a good graphics card.
Perhaps you should first buy a strong graphics card and see how you do in games.
Graphics is most important for fast action games.
Perhaps to a GTX1070/GTX1080 class card.
I think retailers are still trying to reduce inventory so now is a good time to buy.
Do not wait for the GTX1180 unless you have a budget for a top end card.
It will be in short supply and the price will be inflated for early adopters.
A strong graphics card can easily be moved to a new cpu/mobo/ram upgrade later.

the retailers aren't gonna reduce the prices any time soon becuz nvidia will launch the TRX 2070 and TRX 2080 at a higher price.
