Is this a decent pc to start gaming on?

My brother is looking to buy a PC that was built by someone else, and it all has an ASUS A88XM-A motherboard, 8gb DDR3 RAM, and quote “a shitty power supply” which needs to be replaced and it also needs a hard drive. I’ve heard it isn’t the best but I just want to know if it’ll be a good start.

The A88XM-A is an AMD FM2+ motherboard. It is OK for somethings. It could be used for gaming, but you would hit limits quickly. If it has no hard drive and a bad power supply, I would PASS.

anything with an FM2+ cpu like the A-series APUs and X4 is going to be a very limiting factor in what titles you play, if you are acutally paying $ for it much better off with an off-lease corp desktop like this Dell OptiPlex 7010 will completely destroy the AMD FM2+ system with an i5-3470, which IMHO this is a much better base for a starter gaming system.

They guy is only selling it for $80 and my brother is willing to pay for upgrades

There aren't any decent upgrades. That is what we are trying to tell you. FM2+ motherboards are a dead end.

Agree for $80 you can get a high-end mid-tower new, I would pass on it as well and just build a new system or get that refurb intel system to start off with.
