Forget about the size differential. Fact is Microsoft won't let you transfer OS in this manner, is a licensing issue. MS wants to you install fresh and re-enter license#. There goes your nifty idea.

You can install a 2.5 inch laptop HDD into a desktop with a bracket. But you cannot install a 3.5 inch desktop HDD into a laptop, it simply won't fit. Also what do you mean that your desktop won't work? How sure are you that it's the hard drive?

What you seek is not possible.
1. The desktop 3.5" drive will not physically fit in a laptop
2. You can't just move the OS back and forth between the desktop and laptop, and hope it boots up
