I bought a second hand evga gtx 660 to install into my pc. When I got it and installed it I noticed it that the computer would randomly shut down mostly under stress. My friend thought it might be down to the gpu I thought this strange as it was only hitting about 60-70° when under load. But to make sure I cleaned it out and reinstalled it. Tho the problem persisted. I then tried messing with the fan settings in msi afterburner, I increased the speed and changed tried slightly underclocking the card to see if this would help. After it shutting down for the sixth time I decided to replace thermal Paste. Even tho the temps where relatively low in when under load staying between 40 and 50°. When I replaced the thermal paste and reinstalled the card the artifacting began with green and purple horizontal lines. The screen resilution also looked terrible. After a while of trying to repair the card I gave up and bought a new one. The same shutting down occurred. I have now figured out that the power supply Is to blame for this shutting down and not over heating as my friend had suggested. But what I cannot understand is that why would an underpowered psu cause a gpu to artifact the gpu still artifacts to this day. Can anyone explain what could have caused this to be happening, could it still be the underpowered psu and if the card is permanently damaged? .
