Should I get a new modem/router?

Hi guys,

I'm really new to this so I don't know what questions I should be asking, my ISP provided me with a modem / router.

I'm not sure which is which, but the device I have connects directly to the phone jack on the wall, and that same device is also where I plug in my LAN cable which also connects directly to my PC via RJ45.

My questions are, what difference will it make if I buy maybe an expensive router or modem? Like the ASUS ROG Rapture Wireless-AC5300 Tri-Band Gaming Router? What's the difference between a modem and router (i think mine's a router and modem in 1?)

Should I also get a better LAN cable? If so, what are the differences if say, I buy one at ACE Hardware or at a real computer store?

Thanks,

if your a gamer look at your local isp services and there cost. fios/comcast/fiber right now are the best for gaming. for cost there are still dsl service out there. with dsl and slower speeds if you get a lot of people in your home you can kill your network speed. that why gamers and fiso try and push fiber networks for gamers.
ISP ----> Modem ----> WIFI router ------> PC

Oftentimes they make Modem + WIFI router into one box, I call them a Gateway.

If your Ethernet (WIRED) speed is close to what you paid for, nothing to do here.

Check your WIFI speed, u *may* want to upgrade this portion (WIFI) only if you are unhappy with its speed.

Some people want to use their own equipment rather than renting it from the ISP, are they charging you anything for this "modem?"

I actually paid for it during installation.

So basically, what you're saying is, you only upgrade to a better modem if the speed is slower than what you paid for?

I think I'm all set there since I'm paying for a 20mbps plan and I normally get, on average, 22mpbs-30mpbs.

This is both on wired and wireless connections.

How about my lan cable though? The free one they have is pretty short so I had to adjust my station just for the cable to reach, I'm planning on getting a longer one, but don't really know if there are any specifics needed for better quality connection.
