I have a Ethernet jack with internet access. I use it for my laptop but wanted to know could I connect an Ethernet cord from the jack to a router and use that router for WiFi?

I’m in my dorm room lol

Solution
Yes you could but you are better off using an AP (Access Point). Since it sounds like your dorm already has a router in place. Most likely near the modem to dish out the network. So adding another router could cause some issues if done wrong.

You wont run into any problems using an AP.

I don't know, assuming your schools network will allow it sure you can. It would probably be best to ask first. A lot of company's and schools do not allow "rouge access points" which is just a random unknown router on a secure network for security reasons.

I agree. It's better to play it safe and ask first or you may get in trouble and have your internet access revoked. They may already have a wi-fi account set up and all you'll need is permission to get the login password.

Many institutional internet providers treat personal WIFI as "rogue" because that opens their network up to attack. These rogue WIFI sources are actively searched for and shutdown. Definitely check the rules for the dorm and the rules from your campus IT.

@gasaraki how do you downvote androbourne's attached correct answer and then post this malarkey? No you can't use a home router to do this. The only way this would work is with an AP as he mentioned.

That said I agree with everyone else, being its a school network its a bad idea.
