i7700k Getting too hot?

Hey everyone, so I've got an intel i7700k paired with a gtx 1060 6gb and an msi mini itx motherboard.

Problem is - when gaming my GPU temps reach about 7-75 at 100% load which is fine I guess.. A little warmer than I'd like, but my CPU is 40-45 at idle, 60-70 at about 30% load and 75-85 at 60% load! I havent seen it go above 60% usage in any games really, but that seems wayyyy too high.

I've reseated everything, applied new thermal paste, tried positioning everything different, removed fans, added fans...

My case is the Cougar qbx which isn't great for cooling, but I've never seen temps go this high before. The only thing I haven't checked is my PSU, could that cause a mass amount of heat?

The only way the PSU would be the cause is if it was putting massive amounts of heat in the case and the case wasn't venting it.

You can test this by running with the case open and blow a desk fan into the case. This will also show you if increasing the case cooling will help you.

It could be the air in your case is too warm.

If it's not this....and the cooler is mounted snug....and the thermal paste was applied correctly....then I would focus on the cooler's fan (make sure it's spinning at what I'd consider the correct speeds etc and maybe look at the fan profile).

I'm using a lower profile CPU cooler, better than stock but not something quite as spectacular as say.. a noctua...

I have all of the cables managed, so as small as the case is - there is no cables in the way of anything...

The fans all run at 80-100%.. With the sides off and a fan blowing inside the temperature does drop significantly.

So is this a matter of crappy CPU cooling or case cooling?

There is no stock cooler for a 7700k, its a 135w processor and needs a beefy cooler. Comparisons to a 7700 in terms of cooler don't really work.

It appears you were correct I overlooked the amount of wattage my CPU cooler can handle.

only rated for 95w! I have a DEEPCOOL gabriel 120mm CPU cooler.

Guess I'll need a different one, thank you for posting something as simple as the wattage lol. I would have overlooked it for awhile.

Glad you got it figured out!

It's an odd situation, the ks are notionally 75w (approx) but the recommended cooling solution is for a 135w cooler. So treat them as 135 and you get a better result.

thank you for the advice. I'm not new to computing, but admittedly I've never researched much about cooling. I guess I should get into it more... :)

If you want to knock down the heat even more look at Grizzly Thermal paste, it's liquid metal. With my i7 8700k it dropped 20c. I would watch some videos on applying it, it is conductive and can cause a shortage and corrodes copper heat syncs.
