So i recently purchased an EX-mining RX580 XFX OC edition. Used it a month, haven't OC'd it just plugged it in and played. But last night i was sitting on runescape believe it or not and fan went to 100% on 75 degrees, thought okay odd, restarted and still 100%. This morning i turned it on and within 5 minutes it shot up to 75 degrees, to touch it's not that hot but certainly hot for 5 minutes of run time on IDLE! At first i though temperature sensor but after feeling it getting seriously warm after 5 minutes i'm thinking why? MSI afterburner shows STD clock of 1400mhz with 0+ voltage. What could cause this? The card is just idling!

Sure sounds like you have a serious mining infection.

Now this is only speculation because I honestly don't know much about GPU BIOSes but I find the card a bit suspect that its former miner and suddenly your system seemingly gets a mining virus. I admit from what I do know its pretty complicated, but maybe there is something up with the BIOS on the card.

Injecting malware into a video card BIOS seems unlikely, but I guess probably not impossible.

If you want to see if your PC is infected with some sort of mining malware, you could try monitoring network traffic using something like wireshark. You would see regular communication with a mining pool.

Have just done a whole new Windows 10 install (haven't had it long!). Everything seems fine. I think i did have a virus before as this Media website kept popping up. However if this problem occurs again then i will look into the card.

ebay description is as follows and assumed that because they had "5 in stock" it was a miner:

"We are selling XFX graphics cards XFX - We bought the graphic cards new in late March 2018 and have been lightly used. Bios haven't been modified"

Suspect or not i shall keep an extremely close eye but for now we are back to 30 degrees idle temp! yipee!

May have just been coincidental that you got the card and picked up some sort of mining virus. Glad its ok.
