My old lga1150 motherboard stopped working so I am going to be installing a new ASUS Z87M-PLUS motherboard, my CPU is an i5 4690k and I have heard that I should install Z97 drivers onto the board or else I will run into some errors. Is this true?

No, not in the way you just descried it. That board wont work with a 4690k at all unless it has a BIOS (not driver) version that supports haswell refresh chips like the 4690k. If the board does not have a compatible BIOS then you would need an original haswell chip like the i5 4670k or many others in order to update the BIOS to support haswell refresh. It may already have a compatible BIOS installed but the only way to know for sure is to have the board on hand and check. Unless it's advertised on the box as haswell refresh compatible.

The BIOS is available on the ASUS Z87M-PLUS's page on ASUS's website.

No, not true in the slightest.

Install the drivers available directly from the ASUS support page for that board specifically, not from the Z97 variant.

I assume the board is used? Ensure it has one of the newer BIOS' updates installed to support the Haswell Refresh CPU currently.
You'll need version 1105 or newer.

No, you will just need the latest Z87 bios for your specific motherboard to ensure CPU compatibility. But, you can't install it without an already compatible CPU with Haswell Refresh. It's probably already got a bios that is compatible with the Haswell Refresh i5-4690K, but if it doesn't you'd need a non-refresh Haswell CPU such as i5-4670K to administer the bios update.

As for drivers you should use the ones for your specific motherboard, not Z97 drivers.

On the Z87M-PLUS it has a feature where you do not need a CPU or DRAM to update the bios.
see here https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z87MPLUS/ This is true to my knowledge.

Actually yes, you're right. It's a board before the dedicated flashback button on the rear IO, but as per the manual, you use the reset button on the chassis to perform the update.

So I simply just follow the manual to flashback the BIOS to the latest version (1107) and I am good to go?
