Lose access to network resources when adding ASUS RT-N12 router to my computer

Hi all. Having an interesting issue that I hope I can get help with.

I have a home office with the following network structure:
Network Map

Recently, I tried to add an ASUS RT-N12 Router between my PC and the D-Link switch in order to gain a stronger Wifi connection. To quote Douglas Adams, "This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

Basically, my network starts at the Verizon router (Actiontec MI424WR Rev. E) which connects to a D-Link DSS-16+ multi-port switch through Port #1.

The rest of the network is as follows:

  • ■ Port #2: D-Link DNS-321 NAS
    ■ Port #3: Brother MRC-L6800DW
    ■ Port #4: Custom built Windows PC
    ■ Port #5: Custom built Windows PC (This pc contains the shared destination folder for scans made at the Brother printer on Port #3)
    ■ Port #6: Custom built Windows PC
    ■ Port #7: Custom built Windows PC
    ■ Port #8: Custom built Windows PC (My computer and the focus of this query)
    ■ Port #9: TP-Link TL-WA701ND 150 Mbps Wireless N Access Point. This is then connected to a 4 port switch which is connected to an Xbox and a PlayStation
    ■ Port #10: Amped Wireless AP300 High Power Wireless-300N Smart Access Point connected to a Samsung Smart Tv
This is the network as it has been for the past few years and everything worked fine. Recently, I tried to add the ASUS RT-N12 Wireless-N Router and this is where everything sort of went cock-eyed.

I placed the ASUS router between my PC and the D-Link DSS-16+ switch. Upon doing this, I lost access to the NAS on Port 2, the printer on port #3 and the shared folder from port #5. Further, prior to connecting the router, when I looked at my "Network" list in File Explorer I would see listed the NAS and the other 4 PC's on the network. After adding the ASUS router, those were no longer visible.

I called in a IT guy that we had used previously and he was able to fix it so that I could now see the NAS, printer and the shared scan folder from port #5. Unfortunately, the computers at ports 4 and 6 lost internet connection. As soon as removed the ASUS router from the network, those computers regained their internet access.

So my question is.....what the spit? I'm unsure why I lost access to those three network resources (NAS, printer & shared scan folder). I'm also lost as to why those two pc's lost internet access when the IT guy fixed my connection.

I'm wondering if I should have picked up a wifi access point instead of the router? Is that the easiest solution?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

which ports are you using on the ASUS router?

Don't use the WAN port and disable the DHCP on the ASUS router.
Change the LAN IP on the ASUS router to an IP that is within the Verizon router's IP scheme.

If you used the WAN port, you put yourself behind a firewall and, therefore, will not be able to see the other devices.

Thanks Emerald. The directions show the line coming to the router being plugged into the WAN socket which is what I did. Putting the line from the router/switch into port one on the router and then my pc into port 2 worked like a charm.

I've got internet access, access to all my network resources and wifi.

Spot on!
