So a bad situation

Long story, but i have an amd phenom 2 x4 965 with thermal paste on the bottom. It is also on the motherboard socket, and it has been impossible to get off. I've tried to use 91% isopropyl alcohol to wipe the paste off, but with somewhat success. Most of the paste is gone, but the paste still there is hard and is, as stated above, impossible to get off. I've bathed the cpu in a isopropyl bath, which had no success over around 2 hours. The TIM is arctic platinum, and isnt conductive, so I don't think the motherboard or cpu are shorted.

Any help or alternative methods would be super helpful, as this would really suck if it didn't work. (Using a needle or coffee filter to rub it off is out of the question too, as i've tried that)

Solution
You're in a pickle. My suggestion would be the ISO ALC that you have, a soft bristled toothbrush or scrub brush and compressed air. Maybe a can of electrical contact cleaner which is available at most all auto parts stores. The electrical contact cleaner will not damage electronics and it WILL take off stuff that ISO ALC doesn't.

thanks i didn't even think of brushes. If that doesnt work, i'll call quits, because im not spending more than $5 on these parts, since I only bought them for $40

Eh, a can of electrical contact cleaner at any part store or electrical supply house is probably about six bucks. I'd think it might be worth it, but of course that's totally up to you. I'd probably clean them as well as I could with the alcohol and brushes, and then rinse the places on the CPU and motherboard socket out using the electrical contact cleaner. If you have access to compressed air you might follow up with some short bursts of that from about a foot away just to blow out any small chunks that might still be lodged in there somewhere.

Either way, good luck to you in your efforts.

So I used a mixture of toothbrush and rubbing alcohol to get rid of about 99% of the paste. I can’t see any more, but I know tiny bits are hidden(not worried about them) but now I’m in the process of seeing if the parts I have are dead with or without this cleaning. I’m not very hopeful for the motherboard, but the cpu I have high hopes for. Since the pins and cover are in great condition. Also I got that bling ram from Linus tech tips’ $69 pc build video. The gold plated one. So that’s cool.
