Different RAM Singles

Hello. I'm looking at building a PC with 12GB RAM, and in my reading, I've found that you can't use 3 sticks of RAM because it will still be in singles mode. So my immediate thought process is to get a single stick of 8GB and a single stick of 4GB. I got confused here because I know you can use 2 sticks of the same kind, but i guess my question would be: Can you use two single sticks of different RAM?

Solution
You can only "try" as people get all sorts of problems.
As with dual/single - theory is that its slower, practically though, 1% so if you can get 12gb working, it won't really be any slower. Good luck getting it working though, as I find it's the voltage that is normally a problem.
