i have been stress testing a newly installed amd fx4350 cpu using prime95. i tested it for approx 4 minutes and the temp went steadily up to 61c then dropped suddenly to the 57c range. can anyone tell me what is happening and the sudden drop? is it safe to overclock the cpu if it is reaching near max temp (that i have been told is not above 63c) without even overclocking? or should i redo my heatsink and thermal paste? Thankyou in advance for any advice:)

63c is no where near the max temp of the CPU. They are fine for up to over 90c before you will start getting thermal throttling, and into the 100s before you're looking at forced shut downs. What are you using to monitor the CPU though? 61c seems fairly low for Prime95, particularly the FFT tests, unless you're running some custom loop, big AIO or high end air cooler. Either way, your current temps are no concern if you're confident the temp readings are accurate, you should be fine pushing a higher overclock if you wish. Hope this helps! :)

Safe temps are up to 75-80 degrees. You can squeeze a little bit out of it, though if you bought it new you made a mistake with all the new cpus out there. FX series and am3+ platform is really outdated today.

hi @pavkatta882 yeah i was thinking this myself but thought well i can practice with this old pc, i purchased cpu for£70 in sale, this was probably too much not sure myself! If i was to do a full upgrade i would have t spend more on a other things besides the cpu such as motherboard, memory and so on, so it would have been over £70. Hopefully i can learn a few things with this system and venture for latest tech sometime soon after i am more savvy. Is there a graphic card that would work ok with this old pc? currently i have a gt520 which is pretty useless. I tried looking for one but they are mostly £200 plus, a bit out of my price range especially if i wanted t use it in a new build after i upgrade to latest tech if possible!

hi, @cro5513y i am a complete novice at overclocking, luckily i purchased the cpu cheap and my system is old so i am next to lose nothing if i break anything and can worry less if i choose to upgrade to next gen memory, motherboard, cpu case and graphics card. So it is just to practice with cheaply! Cpu-z is the windows 10 app i used to monitor clock speed, load and temp. Am i correct in thinking that if the pc is idle the clock speed would read low values such as approx 1000hz?
