Upgrade CPU or GPU First?

It's been several years since I purchased a new CPU and GPU.

But, I've noticed lately that playing BF1 and BFV (Closed Alpha) has caused some issues with CPU usage, as well as occasional crashes. If I plan on playing FPS games (specifically BFV), given my current setup, what should I be upgrading first, my CPU or my GPU?

I currently have as my CPU an Intel core i7-3770K, and as my GPU an EVGA GTX 780 Ti.

I was thinking that the GPU still has some more mileage left. If I'm going with the CPU, I was thinking of the Intel Core i5-8600K. If I'm going with the GPU, I was thinking of going with a GTX 9 or 10 series of equivalent value as the Intel i5-8600K.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Well, if I were you, I rather change GPU instead of CPU. It is a perfect capable CPU these days. There wasn't much improvement from third Gen until now, excluding last Gen. The improvement was mainly in temperature and consumption.

So, in short, I would upgrade the GPU. But, first, what resolution and refresh rate you intend to play?

Have you considered it AMD? Which country are you at?

I'm in the US. With my 780 Ti, I play at the lowest possible settings, except for Mesh Quality which is set to Ultra. My resolution is set to my screen's native resolution of 3840x2160 at 60 refresh rate (59.94Hz in BFV). Also, to further enhance performance and not get any lag, I changed the in-game settings in BF1 so that the resolution scale is down to 80%, while in BFV Closed Alpha it's lowered even more, down to 50%.

I haven't considered AMD at all, as I've generally had positive experience with the EVGA GPUs.

So, you play in 4K? That's one more reason to change GPU, not CPU. The higher the resolution, the less stress CPU have.

Playing at native 4K isn't an easy task to GPU, but, for that, your GPU is outdated, even at lowest setting.

Depending on the prices, as for Nvidia side, you need, at least, a gtx 1070. As for the AMD side, a Vega 64.

I wouldn't recommend a gtx 1060 because it wouldn't last "long", or even a gtx 980 ti

Thanks :) I'll look at pricing and do some more research, especially on the Vega 64.

Just some miscellaneous but related questions... if I want to tab out of the game and look something up on my many tabs in Chrome, I've noticed that it takes up a lot of CPU. Will I have to get a new CPU to stop making it crash or use up so much of the CPU?

OK, I purchased an EVGA 1080 Ti Founder's Edition.

I hope that lasts for at least 5 years for FPS gaming (I typically play on low settings for maximum performance).

Do you guys think that it'll last me at least that long?
