new cpu seems like clock speed is low

hi, I have been testing my new amd fx4350 CPU install under 100 % load, the temperature reaches about 67c max at a clock speed of 4100mhz. then can fluctuate down to 1406.2 MHz and the temperature drops coinciding this.


the result text file from CPUID HWMonitor Report states 1406.2 MHz after rendering video for 5 minutes giving 100% cpu load.


at the majority of the test the CPU was 4100mhz but I am wondering what is going on and if this is normal? Is the CPU too hot and resulting in the drop of Mhz and temperature, or is the general performance of the CPU ok?

the motherboard is also at about 60c it is an M5A78L-M/USB3.

when the pc is idle and I check the clock speed it is 1406mhz is this normal or should it be 4118mhz as stated as the max MHz value in CPUID HWMonitor?

The clocks drop when under full load? If so it's throttling. Those older FX cpu's are not like intel or ryzen cpus when it comes to temps. AMD recommends that chip not exceed 62c core temp for extended periods of time, it will start to throttle if it gets much hotter than that. That 67c figure you have is called package temp in hwmonitor correct? If not let me know what package temp is reading.

If windows is set to it's balanced power plan then yes clocks should drop at idle. They should not drop under load.

Could this be a windows setting throttling it somehow, or some kind of false reading?

You posted the FX 4350 in your original post. With an 8350 it is almost certainly VRM throttling. Runnign an 8 core 125w cpu with that motherboard and ones like it VRM throttling is a common problem.

You can buy heatsinks for the VRMs and use a down blowing cpu cooler or aim a fan at them, but the cpus power requirements will still reduce the lifespan of the motherboard

thanks for the info, sorry about the error it is a amd fx8350. if i can cool the cpu better would that solve the throttling problem? when i mounted the cpu with the heatsink it was my first attempt at the job and had to take off the fan and heatsink a few times without replacing the thermal paste, until i got it ‘right’, i could try cleaning off the thermal paste and remounting the heatsink and fan to get a better contact with new thermal paste.

hopefully if i do this the temp of the cpu should be improved, will this help with the throttling do you think? that is if i can get the temp down to the high 50c with full load?

Is it ok to use alcohol lens wipes usually used for glasses to clean of the thermal paste? or should i buy a kit with cleaning solution when i buy the paste, is there a difference between m2 and m4 paste, i noticed some on ebay had different types!
