black screen on monitor when gpu is connected

Today I bought a gpu (r7 260x 2 gb). It's totally functioning. But when I brought it home & connected to my gigabyte h61 mobo through a vga to HDMI converter, the screen remains black as if switched off. but when connected to the regular vga port, the screen is ok.
(My gpu is 100% ok)
Expert help needed.

From what you tell me, I can only point in 3 directions: 1- try a different adapter. 2- test in another mobo, as your PCI slot can be damaged. 3-try a different GPU.

What PSU do you have?
