Aside from Mini-ITX motherboards, most have at least three expansion slots. However, save for graphics, the on-board capabilities have pretty much caught up with the needs of most users (sound cards/network cards). Outside of that, you're just looking at expansion capabilities and most systems have enough via the case or motherboard to support most users already.

Most ATX motherboards will have more than enough PCI-Express expansion slots available for whatever you might need and given the on-board capabilities, most Micro-ATX motherboards have sufficient expansion slots.
