Mini-ITX verses ATX Motherboards

With an i5 or i7 and a 1050-1060 Nvidia card would there be any bottleneck problems with using a Mini-ITX motherboard verses a full size ATX board when doing 4K or 1080 video rendering and light virtual world playing?

mini-itx is just a form factor motherboard and won't limit the performance of those parts. The problem you may run into is if you're trying to use a mini-itx motherboard, you are probably using a small case, and will also need to select a smaller sized GPU to allow it to fit inside the case. Just make sure you get the right sized card for your case.

If you want the most stable performance, feature set, heatsinks, etc., you usually have to look into the bigger boards. smaller boards do have a real-estate constraint when competing with bigger boards. you're more likely to find better VRMs on ATX versions just by the shear amount of space required to place the components on the board. Cramming a lot of components on to a smaller space may also create more heat dissipation problems. But of course quality varies with price and there are small boards that are simply better than cheap atx boards.

Having that said, I really like the asus rog strix lineup of itx and m-atx boards.

Looking at the asus rog strix boards available to me where I live, all the mini-itx asus boards say "gaming" in the title. I'm building for 4K, 1080 video edit/render, some light VR gaming, and home office work. Do "gaming" motherboards work okay for video work, or is there a different motherboard I should look at? Of course these expensive asus gamer boards are overkill for light VR and home office work, but I'm worried about video work.

I don't think they are mutually exclusive. For video editing work, you need more cpu threads which means i7 processors and stability to max load which means a board with quality VRM. I would probably go for an 1060-6G with i7-8700k on a rog strix.

You've got to go down the AMD route so you can get the threads, but there is nothing wrong with ITX boards. Like everything, they are built to a budget - so when an ITX is expensive, it is also because they are rigorously test.
Too many scare mongers on this forum.
ITX great, the only limit is what someone said, size of gpu. Cooling shouldn't be a problem with a decent ITX case.

Thank you all for your answers, they have been a big help to me. This is what I am currently looking at, although I have not confirmed all motherboard and part compatibility yet but I will. This is only the second PC I have built, which is the Mini-ITX I am typing this on is now 9 years old and never had a problem. If you have any comments about this list, or care to point out obvious problems, please post. Again, thank you.

Hey , that's a nice looking case. I like horizontal cases such as that one and thermaltake core v21.

just a couple suggestions ddr4 2666 ram because that's max supported by the processor and rog strix B350-I if youre getting a non-k cpu.

Just to keep you up to date, Intel is going to be releassing 9th gen in the next few months
1060 will be upgraded to 2060 in 2 months
obviously, we all can wait for systems, but we do have to make a decision.
Any reason why you wouldn't go down the AMD route? Better bang for buck!

I always move slowly with new computers and waiting to see new hardware could be an option, but just doing video edit/rendering with the MB's, Intel chip and video I'm looking at today probably won't be much different with tomorrows stuff. Even if I buy tomorrows hardware, I won't know the difference between it and the year after tomorrow's stuff. Considering I now render 10 minute 1080 video on my 9 year old ITX computer by clicking render then going to bed for the night (really) this new gear might reduce that to a cup of coffee wait.

And the embarrassing reason I have always gone with Intel is that I am brainwashed and nervous about anything else, because I think anything else might be Brand X and cause me problems. Obviously not true, but I continue to buy only Nvidia, Intel, brand name everything. I've been using computers daily since 1982 and after so much pain with hardware for 35 years I just want to get as close to plug and play as I can get.

Thank you for the advice. It was good.

There's nothing wrong with being a fan of something and only wanting to support it.

That being said, go with 8700K so you can overclock it later if you decide to. The price isn't that big of a jump and is more of an investment then a waste.

if video edit/render is a big deal to you then I would buy used hardware instead. For example amd processors like ryzen 1800x and old intel server or X-series cpu are very good for that purpose. X99 and X79 processors are selling at large discounts right now you can find some great deals there
