So my computer has a Sapphire R9 290 tri-x oc (supposedly one of the best r9 290s?) but im still on fx 8320 cpu and ddr3 ram so I think I'm getting bottle-necked. Due to this I decided I wanted to upgrade the whole mobo, cpu, ram trio (bad time to do it atm, I know) and sell the old set. I also wanted to get a new laptop eventually, something that is small enough for carrying to uni. The ones I'm thinking of atm is the xps 15 with 1050 ti (if there was a 1060 version, I would have gone into debt immediately after release to get one) and the surface book 2 with 1060 (only just found out that this was around the same price as the xps where I am).
My original plan was to upgrade my pc soon because its cheaper and then save for the laptop (with help from the parts I sell and by selling my current laptop too), but then I thought, why do I need my pc at all? I looked up performance comparisons and in gaming the 1060 mobile is mostly better than my r9 290 (not sure about the 1050 ti, tell me please if you do). I don't know if the graphics in these two laptops are under-powered compared to gaming oriented laptops but if they aren't then I don't see why I shouldn't do this and just connect my pc hard drives by usb or make a nas/das.
TL;DR: Is there any downside or negatives to replacing my PC with a dell xps 15(gtx 1050 ti) or surface book 2(gtx 1060) with uni work and gaming in mind?
EDIT: Sorry I should have said this, I'm looking at upgrading my laptop because the one I have is quite heavy to carry around uni all day, thats why my choices for laptops are those 2. Another options could be to upgrade my pc and then just get a cheap laptop for uni.
