Re: Need help on memory type for upgrading Inspiron desktop 620
The Dell manual lists 1333 Mhz DDR3 "only" for this model. You can use 1600Mhz but it will only run at the speed of the memory bus (apparently 1333 Mhz). Thus there is no "future proof". You are at the "future" with 1333 Mhz speed memory. The only thing you could do is max out the memory (8 GB).

There is also an i5 CPU version but the Dell manual doesn't differentiate memory speeds between CPU versions.

------------------

This is literally why I recommended the 1333Mhz.

I don't care what Cruicial's website recommends. If the 1600Mhz RAM doesn't downclock to the 1333Mhz then it's useless and why risk the motherboard not being able to do...

Not sure about now, but I know that in the early 2000's (about the time that Alienware blew up prior to Dell buying them) Dell PC's used to do stupid gimmicky things like proprietary parts to prevent people from changing their systems around. Not sure if that PC falls into that category or not.

I don’t know that there is anything special about it. The PC is from 2012.

Can anyone provide RAM options for me?

Thanks!

Thanks kashimi. I do have a question.

That RAM is listed as PC3-10600 when it looks like i need PC3-12800 per crucial. It just says DIMM, not UDIMM.

Would something like this work?
LINK. Not sure if 1.5v (what this is) vs 1.35 V what crucial states makes a difference. From what I read probably not.

The 10600 and 12800 are the data transfer rates. You can use the 12800 since it is faster but the motherboard specifically wants 1333MHz RAM whereas the RAM you've linked is 1600MHz. You might run into issues where the motherboard isn't able to down throttle the RAM, and it's completely unusable.

That's why I linked the one I did.

@kashimi

I picked 1600MHz because that was the memory type that the Crucial memory advisor selected. Where did you see 1333?

This thread recommended the Ballistix
CTurbo Recommendation

Thanks for the help on this. Sorry for the continued questions.

closing arguments.
Amazon memory might work or not, but what ever Crucial recommends will most likely work. Don't pay to much attention to Crucial memory abbreviation numbers, because you have an old PC and manufactured memory changed since then.
Even Crucial can not keep old memory types for so long, so Crucial finds recent models, which would work.

The only thing to follow - don't mix memory sticks, if you want MAX upgarde, get 2 sticks from Crucial and leave your original memory alone.

That wasn't memory that amazon recommended that was memory that I researched to ensure compatibility.

But sure, pick the guy who literally provided no direction or information to you as best answer.... I'm feeling pretty salty about that.

I am arguing here, but merely stating the facts.
It is widely known that Dell downgrades higher memory speed to the one supported by FSB, and Crucial memory upgrades are recommended most of the time as most compatible.

Will the 1600MHz work? Most likely. But in the event that it doesn't, now you have to do an RMA and wait even longer when you could've just gotten the proper RAM in the first place.

But he already ordered the RAM he wanted and selected you as the best answer, So this thread is done. Nothing else can be added here.

There is no IFs, it is widely known that Dell motherboards downclocks memory, period (as long as memory is compatible). That is why Crucial memory is advised on Dell Community forums (I am a member there as well).
Or you are trying to say that Dell Forum moderators and Specialists don't know what they are advising?
No comments then.

You were replying to me the entire time, so I did not read much more than the first letter in the username.. Just thought it was you. No ill will on my part. I gave you a solution for assisting as much as you did. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the clarification on the memory speed. What I picked up are 2 sticks of this: LINK

Should have it in a week.

I have mixed feeling about all this ordeal - who got Best Answer and why. It is ironic, I guess, you removed it from me and you are using Crucial, as I recommended, not nice.

Well, there is possible bad news coming to you in the mail. The RAM you ordered is high voltage @1.5 V, the RAM I advised is 1.35 V. My suggestion is not pretty as Ballistic, but it is guaranteed to work. Ballistic, might work or not. If it doesn't work, voltage is the problem.
