HDD failure, what to do from here?

Hello everyone.

Yesterday my PC was acting up, freezing and being unresponsive. I thought it might have been something going wrong via my software like a buggy chrome extension or my antivirus causing some interference between programs, turns out this morning (after turning my pc on) that my HDD is having some issues.

When I boot my system I get the American Megatrends report page stating:

SMART detected HDD/SSD failure : Toshiba DT01ACA200 (my hdd)
Warning! Please back up your data and replace your hard drive
Warning! Your HDD/SSD might crash at any moment.
Press F1 to Run Setup.

So I'm pretty sure I must buy a new hard drive and replace my old one, but my question is how can I boot with my current HDD so I an back up my files, because as of right now I can't get past this error page and nothing in the Bios really helps me either. There seems no way to disable SMART in bios.

Does this mean my files are unlikely to be restored?

Depending on how you installed windows, your actual boot files may have been on the HDD. Boot from the startup disk and run startup repair, it may take running it a few times to get it to resolve that issue.

As for the HDD recovery, yes it's possible but we don't take chances so pull it and set it aside. You never know if or when it will fail completely.
When you are ready we can proceed on recovery attempts.

Yes, there's a very good possibility that your files are already lost on the drive. Do not use it until you are ready to try and maybe recover them.
You need to remove this drive and set it aside for now while you get a new drive and windows reinstalled.

Ok thanks for your reply.

I'll definitely do that. I read somewhere that when you get this message it doesn't necessarily mean the drive has already been ruined though, is there a chance I can still boot with it and recover my files that way? If not what are the steps I need to take after having reinstalled windows on a new HDD?

edit: I just realized that my Windows is actually stored on my SSD not my HDD and my HDD is the hardware that's having problems, why would it not let me boot in this case?
