I don't know what is useful information or not, but I will state everything related to this issue:

I got my macbook air from a friend around 2012. He left his apple id and everything logged in. He just handed me the laptop and the charger, told me the password, and left (I had done him a pretty big favor, it was all in good will). I didn't use the laptop AT ALL until a few months ago when I gave it to my mom to use. She told me a few days ago that she kept getting annoyed with all my friend's stuff on the macbook, so I decided to factory reset it and reinstall the OS.

After following the steps, clearing the disk, and logging in with my Mom's apple id now, I am getting an error saying "This item is temporarily unavailble" when trying to reinstall the OS X onto my disk.

Here are the few things that make solving this problem even harder:
1. I am permanently in the System Utilities Tab window thing, so I cannot find my serial number for my macbook because the "about this mac" option isn't even there. my disk is already wiped. Therefore, I cannot get any help from apple support. It keeps asking for the serial number.

2. If I ever need to, I cannot contact my friend who is the previous owner, we have fallen out and are not in contact anymore.

3. This whole issue looks super suspicious. Seems like I stole the macbook air and am trying to wipe it. I don't expect much help from apple support (even if I can contact them). I am so out of luck.

Any help would be appreciated. I am really in a pickle right now.

Much thanks man. If I didn't have that serial key I would've been worse off. Cheers, I solved the problem.
