My EVGA 970 FTW up and died last week. Computer wouldn't boot so I started testing components one at a time and everything points to the GPU. Remove the card and everything starts up. Plug in the first pinset and everything is fine. Plug in the second pinset (with or without the first) and the system refuses to power on. Called EVGA and the warranty expired 3 months prior, they says it's bricked and that's all she wrote...
I could live without playing Overwatch, Battlefield or even using my PC for a few months till the new cards drop. Then I remembered me wedding is in December and I told my fiance I'd do all the invites in photoshop... which is hard to do with no GPU or onboard... At this point I need to look for something and hope it doesn't chew into the wedding fund.
The 900 series (new) still looks to sell for $300, but I can find one or two 1070s that are ballpark $350 (just kidding it was yesterday, but is now back to $420). The new cards (2070) won't drop for another month or two and the 2080 being $600 is way over budget. Seeing as how this is also an upgrade to the PC, should I look at a 1070 as being the cheap but still reasonable upgrade or do I need to look for a ti or 1080 for any noticeable gain over the 970 I once had. Without a price release for the 2070, I can only guess the new cards will be $450ish and don't want to feel cheated for needing it sooner and settling for the old tech.
