Hello. So i already own 2x 4gb ram and im using dual channel obviously. Im thinking of buying 2 more 4gb sticks so i can go up to 16gb ram but im scared i will lose the performance of the dual channel. Note that i cant afford 2x 8gb sticks so is it a good idea to upgrade to 16 gigs?

So you have:

2x4=8GB

And you want to add another 2x4=8GB ?

That's fine as long as the new pair you buy is the same as what you have. If you can't find the same pair from the same company (Let's say you have Kingston for example). You could buy a kit from another vendor (ie: Corsair, Crucial, OCZ) as long as it's the same speed and timings as the pair you already have.

In theory you run the risk of having issues any time you combine sticks that weren't purchased together as a kit (even if they're the same model). These issues could result in being unable to boot or system instability, either of which can potentially be solved by playing around with timings/voltage a bit. You can help minimize this risk by buy sticks that match your current ones as closely as possible.
