So I recently build a pc and got the 8700k but I’m not sure how much I should overclock it. The highest I got was 5ghz but I don’t want to decrease the CPU’s lifespan. What do you guys think is a safe overclock for this cpu while preserving its lifespan as well as getting better gaming performance and using the CPU for what it’s meant for.

I’m running the NZXT S340 with 3 Corsair 120rgb 120mm fans (2 front intake, one rear exuast), I have 1 stock case fan at the top of the case (exuast) and cooling my cpu is the Noctua NH-U9S

My mobo is the ASUS ROG Z370-H

GPU is 1060 6gb scc from EVGA

PSU is 80+ bronze 650w

500tb Samsung evo SSD

16gb DDR4 RAM

Power consumption is not an issue

That you have to test yourself. But it should be pretty good. You just have to keep testing and adjusting OC based the results as every chip behaves differently.

If you're not overheating/crashing while testing, I would call it a day. It's recommended to run:
Prime95 v26.6 for max temp results.
OCCT for stability. Some recommend Asus RealBench too.
Hi I have an 8700K not delidded and overclocked to 4.9GHz. What I would consider are the following.

Make sure your vcore never goes above 1.35v for me that is about the max, some people go all the way to 1.4v but for me that is way too much. I am happy with 1.35v as that is what was required for my 5GHz overclock, but the temps were in the 80's touching 90's for me, again to high for me so I do not use that for 24/7 use, just for benchmarks.

4.9GHz was perfect as it required just 1.278v and now my temps never exceed 70 degrees in Prime and Aida though I have very good cooling in a 360mm AIO.

Bottom line, it is all about temps and vcore with the 8700K, you do not want the temps to really hit 90's degrees but even 80's is to much for me personally. Work on getting the lowest vcore (voltage) you can for your 8700K anything below 1.35v and below is okay, some 8700K's can even do 1.3v at 5GHz if you are lucky. Ultimately if you can keep your temps under load Prime95 Version 26.6 or AIDA under 80 degrees, then you are okay for longevity of the CPU.

I have set my overclock with an offset..

Keeping voltage below 1.40v and running it cooler than 80c should be enough for at least 5 years unless you're unlucky. Most of the time it's the heat that reduces life, not voltage unless you go really high.

As for other pieces of advice, you could always optimize your OC. Manually using things like LLC, lowering VCore (if it's on auto), AVX offset and ... can help.

You could also go back to 4.9GHz and call it a day as I doubt any game would max the stock settings, let alone an OC unless you're playing at 200+ FPS.
