i have a intel g31 motherboard with 2gb ram and intel core 2 duo e7300 cpu onboard my question is that whether or not should i upgrade to get more speed and memory if yes to what?

What is your budget? The MAX Ram for that chipset varies from motherboard to motherboard. However, usually it is 4 GB.
It is better you do a complete upgrade instead of a single part, to get the best bang for your money.

oh I asked to find out max ram for you... and the Maximum RAM Capacity 4GB GB for that motrherboard.
is a DDR2 4GB 800/667 Type ram for this motherboard
and from what I can see it should handle a CPU upgrade to LGA775 for Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme, Core™ 2 Quad, Core™
though I might suggest to not get a Q9650 CPU , but retrain to a Q9400 because of the unknown limit (TDP) of the motherboard.
can you use if for daily workstation stuff, sure I have a Q9400/8GB with a GT720 in it as my office computer and its plenty strong to do anything you need
