Old file strange characters

So I have an old hard drive with windows 7 hooked up to a system with windows 10 trying to receive old files but they all have weird symbols/characters in them anyway to make it more legible???? Or retrieve them back to normal???

The text, a lot are repeated characters then it gets to legible text. I'll have to screen shot it when I get home.

Notepad, it said fax. look like somehow you save the fax.

what app do you open them in windows7?

That was saved or sent as a FAX. Not a simple Notepad ascii file.

It was a a fax opened in notepad and saved.
