I have recently built a new pc with a ryzen 5 2600 and a rx 580. I bought a 600w thermal take smart 80+ white to go in it and its working good. also recently my dad upgraded his system and was going to get rid of his coolermaster 80+ bronze semi modular powersupply. Im wondering if it would be worth it to switch my 600w for his 850w. on paper the specs look a lot better but it has been used for a few years and is probably outside of the warranty. he had an i7 2600k and hd 6950 which should not have pushed it to hard so it should be in good shape. should i switch for the used one?

The I7-2600K was released in 2011. So the 850 watt power supply is likely six or seven years old. If you want a better power supply, I would suggest a quality power supply from Seasonic, XFX or EVGA. Here are a few good examples.

Seasonic FOCUS Plus Series SSR-650FX 650W 80+ Gold ATX12V & EPS12V Full Modular 120mm FDB Fan Compact 140mm Size Power Supply

if your dad got the 10year warranty with the psu then you have sonmething to fall back on. you dont need the supply but it might be worth it to keep it around incase later you want to sli rx 580 or depending on power usage, you may even need the extra power if you want to upgrade to a rtx 2070-2070.

I know what you mean. I built a high end system a while back. I installed an 860 watt Seasonic Platinum PSU. It is a very nice power supply. To this day, I've never heard the power supply running. The only evidence that the fan is running (apart from the obvious) is that the case air filter below it does get dirty.
