DSL showing one speed, I’m getting about 1/10 of that

I’m not really off the beaten path, but cable modem access stops about a mile from my house. DSL limits out at 7MBPS. I have a Zyxel PKZ5001, provided by centurylink, that shows connection status of 7.72MBPS. Speed tests with multiple devices only give me .85 MBPS.

I had an old Actiontec GT701D from an IT job (yeah, I’m one of those contract guys), and configured it for use, with the same results. A little above 7MBPS seems to be the connection status, but getting about 1MBPS download according to Ookla. Device connected was irrelevant- MacBook or Windows PC (both connected directly, nothing else online), even my tablet.

ISP (CenturyLink) says everything shows good on their end, and confirm the 7+ connection, but agree that something is up and have dispatched a tech...but I know the ‘good ol boys’ that will end up being sent out here to troubleshoot have gone through a 5 hour class to familiarize themselves with networking terms, and they will have ZERO idea what to do. So, I put this to you, dear people of the forum. What say you?

First thing to do if you're on a xDSL line is to check that nobody plugged something in before the splitter/line filter. It doesn't have to be an active device...

Just because your xDSL adapter can negotiate a 7.72Mbs signal rate through the phone switch doesn't say it can't be prone to other disturbances like power lines and so on, interfering with the phone line. Also, your xDSL adapter may have suffered a bit with some lightning or almost anything.

Try to borrow a xDSL adapter from somebody. Just because it worked before doesn't mean it hasn't broke down over the last hours :p (Also check your xDSL powersupply...)

Oops! I failed to mention - no phone number here. I pay for DSL only, so the only thing plugged in to the box is the DSL modem. Seriously - I have the ‘official’ green cable that came with the modem run through the wall directly to the telco box outside.
