AMD FX-9370 Overheating

Okay so I’ve been running this build for over 4 years now but was never able to achieve any stable overclock. Closest I ever got was 4.7mhz but that ran a bit hot for my liking so I set everything back to defaults since.

Just the other day, I noticed the idle temps were hovering around 45-47 degrees. I ran prime95 to see what temps were under load and the highest they got to was 72 degrees. I did some poking around and found that the speed would jump between 4.4 and 4.7mhz erratically. Under load, the CPU throttled to 4.1. Went under the BIOS, disabled Turbo Core, and my clock speed stabilized at 4.4 on or off load. But the thing still idles at high temps and still sky rockets under load. I have an H100 cooler and maybe that is on its way out and not able to cool the CPU enough but I’m not sure. I know these are notorious for running hot and I planned my build to support this CPU. I’ve tried other options on here with various BIOS settings and nothing has changed otherwise. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Relevant PC specs below

I don't think that something's wrong with the cooler, we will leave that as the last option. Cleaning the cooler certainly did help (a good sign!), so as the next step try using the rig with side panel removed and then measure the temps again. Could be bad airflow within the case, that will help us to determine whether or not this is the case.

If that doesn't help, reapplying thermal paste is the next step, followed by getting a different cooler if everything else fails (something like Noctua NH-D14 or 15, nothing less for this monster).

Incorrect. That holds true for Intel CPUs and latest AMD's Ryzen, but not so for this old Vishera-based-TDP-abomination of CPU.

Official max temp from AMD for this CPU is only 57C, which is even lower than 8xxx series (61C):

You need to make sure that cooler is clean, operates as intended and replace thermal paste if required. Try running with side panel on your case removed and see if that helps as well (might be bad airflow within the case).

You should not worry at all about idle temps - as long as load temps don't exceed 57C, you are good and will not experience any throttling. Truth be told, this can sometimes be hard with this CPU, it is a power hog.

damn this old space heater... :D

While playing games, it’ll usually get up to 74-78 degrees F in the small room that it’s in just from the heat alone. Never been an issue until just recently. I’ll try cleaning the rad and reapplying thermal paste though and I’ll get back to you guys with the results.

So I just tried cleaning out the radiator pretty well but I wasn't able to try and reapply any thermal paste because I though I had some but I don't. However, the idle CPU temps dropped to around 40 degrees C idle and under load, it stabilizes at 64 degrees C so a small improvement over what it was but still seems high. I noticed that when I took the radiator out, it felt awfully lightweight. I don't recall how heavy these things are when new but it just felt really light. I shook it around a bit and I can still hear water in there but now I'm wondering if there's somehow less water in there. I don't know much about closed loop water cooling systems but it does seem unlikely that water could evaporate out of a closed loop system like the H100. Any thoughts?
