Is there a limit to SSD storage that a M.2 PCIe 3.0x4 slot can support?

Hi guys,

I've recently bought the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 720 as a day use machine and it has a m.2 PCIe expansion slot. After 2 weeks using the machine, I had to buy a Samsung 960 Evo 250gb to clone the traditional hard disk as the bootup speed was simply criminal. But the primary storage is filling up and I'm thinking to get a larger SSD to replace this.

Is there a limitation to what a M.2 slot can support? I've contacted Lenovo tech support to ask advice but was told that it only supports 256gb and a screenshot.

It feels more like different configurations option than limitation. Is the storage limit that the slot can support legit?
Appreciate any constructive advice!

The slot and M.2 interface does not care about the drive size. Lenovo support probably just told you what the system can be configured with from Lenovo now what the actual limit is. It's like asking Ford if a car can be painted Pink. They will give you their official factory colors. Nothing is stopping you from painting the car pink if you really want once you buy the thing.

With all due respect to the HangMan, if the manufacturer says the bios limits the M2 slot to 256 GB and you load up a larger load in blatant defiance, I expect you'll be back here going " What the ...".
