Old PC game lagging like crazy

I mentioned in a thread elsewhere that I've been trying to get the old activision game 'Empires: Dawn of the Modern World' to work on my laptop on Windows 10. I managed to solve the provlem of the game refusing to run by installing patches, and it now works.

But not perfectly - it now lags hugely. It's like the video card or processor can't keep up - except my laptop is a gaming machine with an i7 processor and both an integrated intel HD graphics 620 video card and an Nvidia GeForce GTX960 dedicated.

The game uses the intel graphics card but there's no way it should be struggling - this game was made for Win XP in 2003 and the base requirements are a 32mb video card, Pentium III 600Mhz processor and 128MB RAM...

The only thing I can possibly think of that might be limiting it is that I use an external CD drive, but it is an LG one connected to a USB 3.0 port and I've never had a problem running other games such as Need For Speed: Most Wanted 2006 which are demanding on the graphics front. I've also had the game work fine on another Win10 laptop.

The other thing is that the game requires DirectX 9.0 compatibility which I understand can cause problems? I do have DirectX 11.0 installed though.

Anyone got any ideas what might be causing it to lag so badly? Sometimes it's fine for a few seconds but as soon as I try and give an instruction or instigate an action it starts being slow again.

Cheers

Firstly, Direct X shouldn't be an issue as Windows takes care of that, but if you want to make sure or want to draw Direct X out of the possible issues list you can download the dxwebinstaller from Microsofts page. Also have you tried running this game in a Windows XP machine? It is well known that all releases past Windows 7, all 32bit applications run on an emulator called WOW 64. Running a virtual machine with Windows XP could be the answer to your issues. However, I do not recommend dualbooting Windows 10 and XP as you will have basically no support for your drivers.

Did you try setting Windows XP Compatibility? You need to find the executable file for the game and set it under Properties. Lots of instructions if you google “xp compatibility mode windows 10”
Maybe try one of those links from laptop magazine that show up in the search.

Thanks, I'll try and get an Emulator set up and see how I go from there. This is really helpful!

Yes, I've tried XP Service Packs 2 & 3, Vista, 7, 8 and 10.

I've got Win XP running in VirtualBox and was able to install the game, but once installed it won't run. I get the splash and then nothing. I did try creating an ISO of disc1 instead and running from that but it knows it's not right.

Might just have to buy it from GOG. Cheers!

I think it's a compatibility issue though; I'd imagine that if GOG are selling the game as being compatible with Win10 then they'll have ensured it's optimised as such?

Gog just searches for and applies available patches to the game, things you find when searching for solutions on forums and so on,so if you missed something then getting the gog version might help you,but if it is something to do with your drivers or anything else then it will not help you because the problem won't be with the game.
