I was working and my computer froze. I noticed a burning smell. When I tried to restart it would power on but there was no display and wouldn’t start to bios. The cpu led was on. I tried resetting cmos but that didn’t work. I looked at my cpu and didn’t see any noticible burn marks. Took out my motherboard and didn’t see any bulging capacitors. Now Im stumped. I don’t have any spare parts to test with. I don’t really know how to find out what shorted. Or what to replace.

Specs
Mobo Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0
CPU Amd Fx 9370
Psu Antec 750w
Gpu Evga GeForce Gtx 1070

Solution
Without any spare parts to test with it will be very hard especially since your motherboard doesn't seem to have any sort of onboard video.

However the CPU LED lit up tells a lot. Although it is the CPU LED it may be the board because the board might not be functioning. Burning smells can come from smaller components and not normally bulging capacitors.

Without spare parts though its hard. Do you have a local shop that you can take the CPU to to have them try to do a POST test?
