Problem with 3TB disk

Recently I've taken backup of my Desktop data on a new WD Purple 3TB internal disk. While configuring the disk I had to define it as GPT drive as it more that 2TB. Later on tried to connect that disk to my laptop as external USB drive. As not appearing on explorer, checked the DiskManagement window, again is it asking for MBR/GPT option to choose, while choosing GPT it unallocated the disk and all the backupdata wiped out. Same is happening while connecting to my desktop as external USB drive. But if I take the backup as External drive and keep on using as external, seems there is no problem of loosing data. Only i can not use both internal & external whenever required.

Am I doing anything wrong? Is there any solution to use a 3TB drive both externally & internally whenever required?

Desktop Config : WIN 7, x64, CPU - intel i7 3770 3.40GHz, 16GB ram, MotherBoard: Intel DH77KC
Laptop : WIN 7, x64, intel i7 2620m, MotherBoard - ASUSTeK Computer Inc. U46E , 8GB ram

Thanks in advance, hope to get some logical solution.

I think the issue stems from the fact that your BIOS might be having an issue recognizing the drive when off the USB. In fact, what are you using to pair the desktop HDD with your laptop? You're dealing with two different methods of connectivity which is why the reason your drive, when set to operate as an external drive, is working for both platforms.

Might want to share the make and model of your desktop motherboard and the make and model/SKU for your laptop.
