Hey i have a Hp Compaq 8300 convertible minitower PC, Can i change my psu?

Hey guys i have a HP Compaq 8300 convertible minitower PC. I recently went to a Computer Shop to buy a new psu for the machine however they said to me that, As it is made by HP the psu cannot be changed, And to ring him if we needed him to change it. Now we did take his word for it however, we didnt know whether he was saying that so he'd get another customer or he was tellling the truth.

So i thought i'd ask you guys.

The 1060SC draws about 150w all by itself and requires a 6pin PCIE power connector from the PSU. I would suggest upgrading the power supply to a quality 400-450w unit myself. They do make power supply adapter cables so that you can use an aftermarket PSU in it.

Obviously, if he can change, anyone can.

The REAL issue is that HP likes to use proprietary connectors on the motherbd side of its power supplies so that you cannot just install an aftermarket one.

Which brings us to the question of why are you changing the PSU?

I've recently done it on my nearly maxed-out Hackintosh/Win10 machine (i7, GTX 1080, 32 GB RAM, BR burner, 1TB SSD, 6 TBs of HD/SSHD). Using an adapter from Aya Group I installed a 1000W Corsair PS in my 8300 CMT. Despite what the adapter manufacturer said, the wiring needed to be modified for this application; I found the info on that on Amazon.

The mounting holes don't line up, so you're on your own there as well. I use one screw in a normal location, and another larger one through the case into the mesh grill on the power supply, short enough to make sure it doesn't hit any components inside the PS. It's not ideal and does sag a little; perhaps someday I'll come up with a better solution, but unlike my previous dual PS solution this setup allows me to actually close the case.
