There's an ethernet port just outside my room, but the cable I have is too big to fit (URLs below for image reference)- is this thing A) even an ethernet port at all (I just assumed) and B)compatible with something I can get my hands on? WiFi at my house is dreadful and this would make a lot of things much easier.
My cable:

Thanks for any and all help

Does not show the image but it sounds like you have a phone line and not a ethernet port. If you are very lucky you might be able to replace the port with ethernet. Best would be 8 wires since that is more likely actually ethernet cable. If it is 4 wire phone cable then it is not likely but I suppose it is worth a try but you would be limited to 100mbits.

That is only the first requirement.

Most phone cable though is daisy chained though a bunch of jacks. That will not work correctly. Some of the newer phone wire goes directly back to a central closet. If it works that way you should be able to terminate the other end with ethernet ....but now the problem is how close is the router to this central closet.

The best...

The best option if you can not have ethernet is to try powerline devices. The newer ones based on av2 work much better than the older devices. Unfortunately there are the rare houses powerline does not work in so you want to be able to return them.

Solution
First, your link does not open.
Second, having an "ethernet port" in your room does not mean this port is connected yo your router (or anywhere).
Third, if it's "too small to fit", it means that it is not an Ethernet port (RJ45) but phone port (RJ11). You have to check what kind cable is connected to that port, and where is the other end of this cable, to even consider it using for wired Ethernet.
