So this already may be answered on here but I couldn't find a straight up answer. My friend is looking to re-sell is old PC. inside he has his OS stored on his SSD and everything else on his HDD. I recommended DBAN for writing over the HDD, but my question lies within the SSD. Can he run DBAN on his HDD and when its done still be able to boot into windows to run a different software for the SSD? what would be the best method for someone who is not well versed in PC related stuff.

Thank you!

Solution

DBAN can work in one of two ways. You can either enter a command at the bottom of the screen to immediately start erasing all the hard drives you have plugged in to your computer, using a predefined set of instructions. Or, you can choose the hard drives you want to erase, as well as select exactly how you want them to be deleted.

As you can see, the F2 and F4 options are informational only, so you don't have to be concerned about reading through them unless you have a RAID system set up...
If I have a HDD I want to wipe I use https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva. Within the Tools menu it has a drive wiper. You can set it to overwrite data up to 35 times. He can be within Windows, open Ccleaner, access the tools and choose the drive he want to wipe. It won't touch the SSD.

Do you know if you can run DBAN first and still be able to access Windows normally since his OS is on his SSD?

Will the free version work for this?

As you can see, the F2 and F4 options are informational only, so you don't have to be concerned about reading through them unless you have a RAID system set up (which probably isn't the case for most of you... you would probably know if so).

For the quick method of erasing every hard drive plugged in, you'll want to press the F3 key. The options you see there (as well as the autonuke one here) are described in full detail in the next step.

To have the flexibility to choose the hard drives you want to erase, how many times you want the files to be overwritten, and more specific options, press the ENTER key at this screen to open interactive mode. You can read more about that screen in step 7.

That addresses your concern and the answer is yes you can tell DBAN to only delete the data on the drive(s) you choose.

Solution

Yes it does.

Seems simpler to me. I don't have to make an ISO and burn it to a USB or CD/DVD/BR disc drive. I just download and run.
