I'm building a high end workstation that will have Intel Core i9-7900X CPU and GIGABYTE X299 AORUS GAMING 7 PRO motherboard. I'm planning to install 64GB of RAM into it.

So when I'm reading Intel specs for the CPU, it feels like it supports DDR4 RAM at 2666 MHz. But then the motherboard has these specs that lists 2666 at a lower end.

So I am wondering, can I purchase RAM with higher speeds, like this one, and run it at 3200MHz since mobo supports it? Or will it be automatically downgraded to 2666 MHz by the CPU?

I'm somewhat confused.

Solution
Yes, it can run 3200mhz. The board has a feature called XMP(Extreme Memory Profile), when activated through BIOS it can run memory speeds upto the max rated board supported speed.

Oh, thanks. So let me see if I got it right -- I can buy DDR4 4400 RAM and it will still run with that i9-7900X CPU at 4400MHz?
