How to increase coverage - EE brightbox 1

Sorry I am not a techy so forgive me...I have BT line in and on EE broadband with a supplied Brightbox 1. It works but I need something with a better coverage to reach wireless speakers in other rooms. I was going to by a new premium style router to replace the Brightbox, but noticed the brightbox is a "combined" modem/router! I did not realise that alot, if not most independent routers are just routers and would need a separate modem. My question is can I buy a premium modem and plug it into the brightbox or do I need to find a new modem as well?

Any help appreciated.

I found this manual.

Hopefully that is the same router you have. Page 60 talks about turning on and off the WiFi. Page 8 talks about bridge mode.

If you do want to get a new router, make a list of the features you want and then focus on routers that provide those features.

I would also encourage you to read about access points and range extenders. It may be possible to extend your coverage without getting a new router.
Not sure if the device has a bridge option which would make it a modem only. The other option is to disable the wifi on the britebox and then use your new "router" as a AP. This will in effect replace the radios on the brightbox with the radios in the new device.

Will it work better, there is no easy way to predict that since some house absorb more signal than others.

There are a lot of expensive routers out there with antennas all over. They might claim to have stronger signals, but legally there are limits to how strong the signals can be. That does not mean that the new router does not have features you are interested in.

Another thing to remember is that WiFi is 2 way communication. The router might send out a good, strong signal, but your phone, laptop, or whatever might not.

One thing I do when a friend talks about weak WiFi is go around the area with a WiFi signal strength app on my phone (free). Sometimes you find the signal is good in many places, but there are spots where it is not.

Thank you both for your replies.Reading up on the router /modem I have, it seems they are fairly basic and minimal in their coverage. I will take you up on the signal strength app idea to better position the router I have before shelling out for another one. But I ma still unsure if I can switch off the wifi on the Brightbox to use it as a modem only!! If I need to get another modem are they all fairly basic or do I need to ensure it is a certain spec to get the best coverage, does anyone know?
Still learning about all this...:)
