Before doing anything, read. Watch videos. Surf the forums. Read more. Google any bios names you are not really familiar with. Then go back and read everything again until you are fully tutored in just exactly what OC is what it does, what different settings do, what you can expect, how to test for stability, just what are the requirements for your intended level of OC....

The more you know, the better your chances of reaching your speed goals, with a stable platform and acceptable temps. OC is a hobby, not a necessity or a requirement with newer platforms, as as with any hobby, patience and preparedness are key terms. Jumping in blind will only get you freaked out when something unexpected happens, and it will.

Just take it slow. Crank up the speed/voltage, run benchmarks, monitor your temps, etc., until you've found something you're happy with. Look at tutorials for your processor and just follow along. As long as you take your time, there's nothing to worry about.

overclocking is safe as long as you know what you are doing. you can always go into your BIOS and just use the preset overclocking options but if you do anything advanced like raise voltages you may make your PC unstable but normally you can go intoo the BIOS again and set everything back to default and start over

the biggest factor of overclocking though is making sure you have a good cooler.

I suggest asking yourself "why overclock" honestly. At stock speeds an 8600K is going to do everything most people will ask of it easily.
What is it you are hoping to achieve? I overclocked a 6700K for 3 years, then put it back to stock speeds and couldn't tell the difference..

So unless you have some actual need for the extra power why stress about it, just leave it at stock. If you have a 1080Ti and a 144hz monitor and want every last fps then maybe it's worth doing. Maybe.

Otherwise some good advice above and worth following. I'll just add the easiest way to safely overclock is just to set the sync all core option and increase the multiplier a little at a time and do some stability tests each time without ever touching the voltage. You won't get extreme overclocking that way but you are unlikely to hurt anything either. A lot of CPUs will go up a few multiplier steps on stock voltage pretty easily.
