Can't set up Asus router

Bought a new Asus RT-AC86u router. Can't set it up wirelessly. The "web GUI" (IP address) won't load - I get the message "HTTP not found". I also tried to directly input the IP address without the HTTP but it still won't work. I also set the proxy settings on all my browsers and it still won't work. I can't set the router up via a wired connection because the PC and the modem are on different ends of the house, and my laptop doesn't have an ethernet port. Help!

That is a question for your ISP I suspect. A dsl "modem" is kinda a rare thing most are modem/routers.

If it is actually a modem many require you to setup PPPoE on your wan port. Some require a userid and password.

If the dsl box is actually a router you may have to change the ip blocks used. It would likely be better to run your asus as a AP to avoid the dual nat issue.
What does it matter if the modem and the pc are on different sides of the house. Bring the router near the pc and plug it in directly. When you have a basic configuration on it put it back.

Many routers are designed to not allow the first config via wifi. Too many stupid people that don't change the wifi passwords or admin passwords so the box is wide open. It gets very tricky to try to change the wifi password while you are actually using the wifi connection.

Thanks Bill. Since we "stupidly" hadn't changed the pw for the wifi, I did that. I also followed your suggestion of bringing the router and modem to the PC and was able to set it up (or so I thought). Afterwards, I put it back where it was (re-plugging the DSL line as well). However, when I then tried to use the internet, a page popped up saying the router was trying to connect and it never did. I tried updating the firmware but was unable. Any other suggestions? I appreciate the help.
