I purchased this wireless network adapter https://www.ebay.com/itm/Realtek-300Mbps-Mini-USB-Wireless-802-11B-G-N-LAN-Card-WiFi-Network-Adapter/232267569297?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 which claims to get 300Mbps but when i do a speed test it says im getting .12 Mbps, is it a hardware thing or faulty purchase. Also I was wondering why i do not get 5G network connection using certain wireless adapters. Thank you

what are your computer specs. there has got to be a better wireless adapter than that. your speed depends on the connection quality and strength from your router/switch

Your speed will depend on your package from your ISP, distance and obstacles between your pc and the router and the adaptor your using. If you only have a 12Mb connection then you're not going to get 300Mb even if your router supports it.
Im just going to continue using my previous wireless adapter, im pretty sure it is better connection wise, but when i play certain games i get significant ping, i was looking for a similar one that also has 5g, thank you for the help though

gaming needs very little bandwidth.
it's likely a connection quality issue from distance or congestion.
the printed speeds for wifi are bs. the client is normally the weak link.
in the links below you can see how printed wifi speeds drop heavily.
you have to put your device right next to an access point to get -30dB or higher.
I have a google home in line of site of my AP about 15ft away and it gets -55dB on 5G.
the tests on SNB are using 2x2 mimo antenna's which isn't in a lot of devices.

First REALTEK does not actually make end user device they make the chips. This ad says don't buy generic wifi cards but that is exactly what this is.
There really are only 2 or 3 other manufactures of wifi chipsets so its not like some unknown companies are making them.
The same exact chipset can be combined with many combinations of antenna and amplifiers also.
It would be very nice if they published the FCCID of the device that way you could look it up and find out who really makes it and what power output numbers are. This device may actually be illegal like a lot of the crap sold on ebay and amazon if the are selling it without a FCC approval.
In general these small devices...even the ones that come from large companies like tplink or dlink etc.... have horrible performance numbers. The small size means they have tiny antenna and they most time also have very low power radios to save battery power. In addition the device is so tiny it is almost enclosed in the computer case which blocks the antennas even more.
Try a 10ft USB extension cable and see if it works better away from the machine. There is not much you can do about the small antenna and low power output.
