Currently in confusing about m.2 placement:

what is the difference between connecting an m.2 on the motherboard and connecting an m.2 via an PCI-e adapter?

In a PCIe adapter it would run in SATA mode while on MB likely in faster NVME mode, depending on MB and drive itself so specifics are needed to know.

SSD may not be bootable if connected via PCIe adapter card. If connected to M.2 slot there's no such problem.

So your conclusion is that the Gigabyte H370M D3H will have an advantage to run an Samsung 970 EVO m.2 on the MB than installing it on a PCI-e Adapter?
