High temps on OC I7 8700k

So I did my first ever overclock and pretty sure everything is working out fine! I had the oc on 5ghz but it crashed my pc when I was rendering so put it down to 4.8ghz. I'm rendering a video now and i can see that its at 80c - 90c. I'm a bit worried as i have a good cpu cooler ( corsair h115i pro) . I recently changed the thermal paste on it as it was just after I overclocked. Could there be somethign wrong with it ? What should I do ?? The max ive seen it in games is like 72c but only goes to 80-90c when im rendering
 
Solution
At 4.8Ghz you should be able to set the voltage at 1.300v or less, mine works at 1.278v for 4.8GHz though I have mine of adaptive mode. Start with a fixed vcore at 1.3v and then work your way down in very small increments like 1.295v, 1.290v etc and test for stability with Prime95 version 26.6. If it is not stable, go up 1.305v etc.

I personally would never go over 1.35v and really limit it to 1.325v at most...
Whats your voltages? the water pump is working? how messy is it inside your case? does it have proper ventilation?

lastly, some corsair AIO WC have a proper way to place the backplace, its a common mistake to install it wrong and get a bad contact between the block and the cpu heatsink

while im typing this to you ( not rendering/ on idle) its 1.344v (IDK if this changes under load). Case is supper clean. 1 120MM Fan at the back and 1 120mm fan on the top of the case and of course the 2 140mm fans at the front. I cannot remember but before the oc the temps were probably ( these numbers just popped up in my head) but i think like 70c maybe?? Confident that its on right



 


You know, I blame 1.344Vcore, things get exponentially hot past 1.25v even... I don't think a AIO solutions are up to task after 1.3v, I think you'd need a custom loop for that... and rendering is what comes closest to stress tests so... that may be the case.

Also, there's some fluctuations on VCORE when on demand, the system pumps a little bit more juice If your VCORE is set to offset or adpative, if its on override and manually set there's still some fluctuations but should still be around your set value

I'm a real big noob when it comes to 'actually' computer stuff. I can build my own but fu*ked for stuff in the bios :) What should I do?


 
Ok lol, so first things first, if you're into overclocking you need to read some guides around, especifically ones for your CPU... In short you'll have to set your VCORE manually, which is, well, the voltage your CPU is getting... higher voltages means more heat, too much voltage means a fried CPU or at least a very decreased lifespan.

if things havent changed much since intel's 4th generation, a.k.a. 4770k (the best cpu ever), you don't want to go past 1.3v, if you're conservative like me and want your chip to last long, you don't want to go over 1.25~1.27v

the final deal is that you want the highest clock (ghz) with the lower voltage possible... but then again, if you want to overclock, you've got a bit of reading ahead, so for now default your bios before you cook your cpu and go find them guides.

Thanks so much for that. i have a asus board. Do you know how I can reset it to normal? Also do you know any good overclocking tutorials?? Again im a noob at it ;)



 


Its a bit complicated because every manufacturer has sort of a different bios, though what you need to find is something like "load default settings" on your bios then save and exit, some bios you can hit f10 to load the defaults, then you save everything and exit. Shouldnt be hard to find at all...

sorry but for the 8700K I don't know any, again I'm on a 4770k, though its certainly not hard to find googling around for 8700k overclocking guide

I found one and he had it at 1.350 v. What should I change it too?
