I need to turn my Vizio Smart tv on from away from home. I don't have a DVR anymore, but would like to watch the Bears game about an hour or 2 after it starts. I can handle the channel changes thru my xfinity remote app, but that doesn't turn on the tv. It doesn't look like the vizio remote app works outside the home.

Solution

Are you connected directly to the TV with the cable or are you going through a cable box? If a cable box, turning on the TV does not matter since what you need to turn on is the cable box. All the TV does is display what the cable box sends it. Just leave the cable box on, TV off, the issue you have is the rewind time. If you set a power timer on the cable box it will actually power it on but it will not "turn on", it will be at the basic mode where the clock is on. The only way to do...

My idea was that I would be home within an hour or so, then I could always rewind the program that is currently playing. I suppose I could just turn the TV on and set the correct channel even before I leave in the morning. I just thought I could do it remotely, since everything is having remote apps now days.

If you don't have a DVR how are you going to rewind it? The TV can't record it for you without a recorder.

I apologize that I failed to mention my provider is Comcast xfinity. They allow me to rewind a show as long as I don't change the channel. It only rewinds as far as the time I started watching a certain channel. Sorry I didn't mention that.

You can use micro-computer like Raspberry Pi, with infra-red transmitter programmed for your TV, with remote application. Not an easy task if you have never touched computer programming.

Another option: Check whether your TV has an option to turn on when power is applied (plugged into the socket). YOu can then use ready-made remote-controlled Power Outled to turn your TV (or a simple cristmass lights timer).

The only way to do what you want is to get someone to physically turn on the cable box or be able to change channels if it just stays on. If the remote app does not work outside the house, then you are out of luck unless you setup a VPN connection from the phone to your router. That may work, but will take a bit of work.

If you really really want to record stuff when you are not around, get the DVR option again.
