No clue what caused it but my Macbook pro started randomly shutting down 2 days ago. The shutdowns are COMPLETELY random, sometimes it will shutdown as soon as I boot it into OS X sometimes it will take 15mins. It only happens on OS X for some reason, it works fine on bootcamp (windows 10). I updated it to the latest OS X (High sierra 10.13.6) and that didnt seem to fix the issue, it continues to persist. I've followed all of apples recommendations to attempt to fix it but nothing has worked. They suggested I take it into an apple store to have it fixed, but I have a feeling that will be a waste of time as it only occurs on OS X which makes me think its software related and not hardware related, idk though.

Specs:
Macbook pro 15inch mid 2014
2.2 ghz intel core i7
16gb 1600 mhz ddr3
intel iris pro 1536mb

Solution
Given how old it is, I'd suggest that you see if the cooling vents on the unit are clogged with dirt /debris. Often tims overheating can have your laptop/MacBoook shut down due to thermal issues.

From this and this thread, it looks like it's a bug.
