Looking to overclock my cpu to the max. Ive had a look at similar threads but they are all outdated and new coolers have come out ect. Price is no object. I have a gtx 970 but will upgrade to 2080ti in all likelihood. What should I get, liquid or air cooled? And which ones from both categories are the best for my system. Thank you in advance

Solution
Overclocking the 4790K "to the max" means 4.7-4.9GHz and only require a 120mm AIO system with 2 fans on the radiator.
of course you can use something bigger hell if you got money to spend get a 3 fan radiator 360mm but you wont see much of an improvement on the temps.

I run mine at 4.7 (because it is unstable at 4.8 such is the lottery of Haswell chips) had a 240mm on it, change to a 120mm with dual exhaust fans and I get exactly the same temp 35-78c. remember your threshold for voltage is 1.30v

good luck

4790k is a bit better than 4770k when it comes to temperatures. haswell/haswell refresh processors aren't soldered TIM like the Haswell-E Broadwell-E variants. You will need a pretty good cooler to make the best overclock out of it.

Liquid coolers would handle summer better but be prone to leaks.

AIO: Preferably 240mm or 120mm with thick rads. Normal 120mm would be noisy. Corsair is the most popular brand right now.

Air: Anything big with 4+ heat pipes. Noctua has the best ones right now. Though Be Quiet! Dark Rock is the sexy one.

CPU: It's pretty old. Consider getting it delid by a professional. Helps a lot on Haswell.
